Meanwhile back at the Ranch…….

Yes, there was some activity at Rivar Hill on Saturday. We rolled out JMX but only to find that an air brake fairing was loose. As Andy hadn’t finished the annual inspection on JPC, that could have been a show stopper, but fortunately Alan Pettitt was at hand and, following a trip to Kintbury to obtain the requisite equipment, he secured the fairing and declared it airworthy. Then having observed the ritual of towing the Land Rover round the park until it coughed into life we got on with the serious business of moving the winch.

Overnight frost had consolidated most of the mud and a light northerly drift meant not having to drag the winch down the hill, from whence its recovery would have been uncertain. So we elected to deploy a single winch cable lest the tow vehicle buried itself.

But in true Shalbourne spirit all was forgotten once flying commenced. We got in some well needed air time made even more enjoyable by Harris’s Smooth Winching Services. The Sun shone, we ate Rowland’s lardy cake, a flock of lapwings passed by and gliders were once again seen over the Downs.

Well one does have to finish on a lyrical note 😉

Good Intention Bad Indentation

Composite structures can put up with remarkable amounts of bending and twisting, but they don’t fair as well when being squeezed or poked. A group of us scratched our heads this morning as to how several dents had appeared in the top leading surfaces of the Vega wings, until it occurred that they corresponded with the position of one’s fingers when pushing the aircraft.

The apparently hard surface of the wings at this point is in fact only egg shell thick, beneath that is a layer of foam on a thin fibreglass substrate. When Andy opened up the worst damaged area, about 50 mm in diameter, further investigation showed the damage had extended to an area about 150mm in diameter. So this little dent turned out to be almost large enough to be recorded as a major repair.

So when pushing on the front of the Vega wings please place the palm of your hand on the leading edge and avoid any downward pressure on the wing skin.

Sound advice?

“When flying try to stay in the middle of the air. Do not go near the edges of it. The edges of the air can be recognized by the appearance of ground, buildings, sea, trees and interstellar space. It is much more difficult to fly there.”

And compliments of the Season to all who helped rig, hooked on cables, drove winches, worked through reams of paperwork, sat for hours in the back seat and generally made it all possible.

And if you’re stuck for gift ideas, how about one of these?

Sun 8th – dull but useful

The weather was bad, even when viewed from under a winch, so while Jeremy worked at developing a greasy ring on his trousers….

Richard was at prayer in the hangar.

Meanwhile I puzzled on the intricacies of a Skytost guillotine…
