Recent Exped to Portmoak

As you may (or not) know some of us spent a week at Portmoak back in early October and it’s fair to say we all had a great time flying in ridge, thermal and weak wave. I personally logged over 10 hours of flying during our stay.

Portmoak (SGU) kindly offered us the use their Perkoz for one afternoon and during this time I had flights with Andrew, Bob and John. We were all surprised how nice it is to fly and especially how quite it is. The Perkoz is a great improvement over the Puchacz, 78kts on the winch and a VNE of about 145kts!

Hopefully the attached photos will encourage others to join us on these expeditions in future………….. btw the next one is probably at Camphill around Easter 2023 and another to Milfield is already booked for next October but more on this later 🙂 If you fancy coming along just let me know and we will see if we can arrange to take a Puchacz with us.

SUGC at Juniors Round 1

We certainly kicked off Juniors round one with a bang! Myself (Nick), Alex, Stan, Matt, Fin, Beanie, Marie, Pete and Jim all headed up to Sutton Bank on friday for what looked like a really good weekend. Saturday was the day when the real magic happened. Alex got to 10,000ft in a DG1001 and managed to squeeze in a first flight in a Discus, while we (Nick and Jim) surfed the 15 or so km of the southerly ridge in the Janus. The others all did 2 flights each, except for Finn who only managed the one, sadly because the afternoon flying coincided with his nap time.

We all rounded off the day with a bonfire, a spectacular fireworks display, some drinks and midnight humus and pitas. With the poor weather on sunday, we packed up and headed back south.

Huge thanks to Pete and Claire for making the Janus available and to Jim (and Pete again) for taking turns to fly us lot and the others there. Tim (+620 syndicate) also deserve special thanks for doing much the same. Overall, another superb Junior weekend and we will certainly be making an appearance at Denbigh for Round 2!

Milfield Pics

What a truly amazing time was had by those members who ventured up to the Borders GC (Ex RAF Milfield) in Northumberland recently to experience flying over the Cheviots.

I’ll let the photos do the talking but I’m sure we will be going back again. BTW if you want to come along next time get yourself cleared for aerotowing and bring your glider or if you have the required experience why not bring a club glider along instead?
