Tow Out Gear
Fitting is quite straightforward but as the Puchacz is tail light it is vital that both securing pins are located and locked in place with the R clips. To make sure we do not lose these fittings they are chained to the tow out bar.

To fit the tow out gear:
# Fit tail dolly using the locating marks on the fuselage for reference.
# Attach the tow bar to the tail dolly using the 12mm bar and R clip.
# Raise the tow hitch end and pass the remaining bar through the Puchacz tail wheel spindle and secure with the R clip.
# Fit the wing dolly onto either tip as close to the tip as possible to avoid placing strain on the ailerons and secure with the bungee straps.
# Finally attach the tow hitch to the tow out vehicle.

Note:
* There is ample adjustment for the tail spindle bolt but it is important that the tail dolly is aligned with the marks on the fuselage first.
* Only use this tow out gear if the wind speed is relatively low as I have not made a rudder lock yet and the rudder might move around too much otherwise.
* The tip dolly will fit a K13 but the bungee straps are a little to short and may get damaged.

Please take great care to limit your speed when towing out this or any other glider.

Leading 5KVA Generator
Purchased 11/2010 from KMS Direct this is a standby generator to cover periods when the main Petter 17KVA Generator is unavailable. It is 'portable' to allow work such as welding etc. at locations remote from the main Petter 17KVA Generator. It may also be deployed to support catering for events such as 'Open Days'; 4.5 KW will easily power a microwave oven (1.8KW) and the Roundout Bus 230V lighting or heating, electric kettle, oven or boiling ring.
----

Service
Service interval 100 hours, see manual. For average use this equates to once per quarter in the Winter and once per six months in the Summer. Recommend end September, end December, end March.

Service notes (additional to manual)
* Make sure air filter bolts are good and tight. Failure to do this may result in fragments of the filter assembly being sucked into the engine.
* When changing the oil, run the engine until warm then lift the generator up onto four breeze blocks or similar. When the oil drain plug is removed oil will flow onto the base plate and then drain out via some holes that can be seen from underneath. Place a container capable of holding at least 2 litres beneath the holes before draining.
* Oil filter can be reused if not damaged. Wash in acetone when oil is changed.
* Valve clearances – inlet and exhaust - 0.006” (0.15 mm). To adjust the valve clearances it is necessary to remove the right hand end plate and air cleaner from the unit. Both valves will be ‘rocking free’ when the engine is at TDC on compression. The engine can be rotated using a socket spanner on the crankshaft end nut.
----
Non Routine Maintenance
25Sep2011:
Voltage seen to be varying from 110V to 220V. Leading engineer identified cause as faulty alternator capacitor; suggested Maplins replacement as good as manufacturer’s spare part at half the price. Any combination of 400V capacitors to a total value of 36mF acceptable. Obtained 2 off 20 mF and 2 off 16mF one set fitted and one set kept for spares.

Alternator is accessed by opening exhaust box enclosure, removing silencers and back panel
*August 2010: Very smokey exhaust and large loss in engine performance. Turbo impeller found to be seized. 2nd hand turbo and manifold obtained via ebay (£100ish) checked over, & fitted with new manifold gaskets. (we have a spare manifold to head gasket leftover) Engine oil and filter changed at the same time. Runs fine
*May 2010: Front driveshafts removed. Need new outer joints (gaiters have been split for some time), small slits on inner CV joint gaiters - joints look good, so just replace the gaiters). Partco can supply outer joint at £95 each. They can't supply inner cv joints, but they can send the driveshafts away for reconditioning at a price of £195 +VAT each. Milner offroad can supply the outer joints for £65 (we have the more expensive 25-spline CV joints), gaiters for £6, etc. So new outer joints & gaiters were fitted, and new gaiters fitted to the inner joints on both driveshafts. It also required two new lower wishbone balljoints, one steering track rod end and new Anti-Roll bar bushes. Total bill, incl deliv and VAT comes to £224.
*New front dampers fitted March 2010. A dramatic improvement!
*Clutch replaced by Newbury 4x4 in Autumn 2008

One man cable change procedure
Easier and safer than previous methods!
* Put new cable reel on trailer, park winch in corner of field (NE is best).
* Attach cable end to winch with a 'pullout weak link' and tow slowly to the opposite corner.
* Attach tyre, return to winch, attach cable to drum, wind in.

Please View/Download full procedure:
or

Steel cable
*We use steel cable to launch with rather than Dyneema, or Skyrope. Dyneema is expensive (2-3 times the cost of steel cable) and would probably only result in launches 100 foot or so higher than we achieve with steel cable. It's unlikely that it would last as long as the steel cable does.
*Skyrope is a polypropylene rope that Skylaunch have started to offer. Its roughly the same cost as steel cable, and may give slightly higher launches. However, the size of our winch drums would restrict us to only about 1000 metres of Skyrope (our field is almost a mile long), so we'd get less height.
*The steel cable we use is 4.5mm diameter, of 7x7 construction, and typically 1500 metres comes on a drum.
* We have bought the last couple of drums of steel cable from Skylaunch. Price was £311 (incl VAT) each. Plus £50 for delivery on a pallet.
*Two drums of cable were purchased in April 2009 (and fitted to the Skybrid winch shortly afterwards) Two more drums of cable were purchased in April 2010 in readiness to replace the Skybrid cables again (this winch has been used almost exclusively to do all the launches)
*Previous supplier was Cosalt, Birkenhead branch. Contact: Ton Sedgwick on 0151 650 5606. The last price obtained from them was in March 2009: £364 per 1500m drum.

Parachutes/Drogues
Quicklinks/Carabiners/Maillon Rapides
We use one of these to connect the drogue 'chute to the end of the winch cable. Carabiners have been used, but over time they seem to stretch, and they are more expensive than the Quick Links (aka "Maillon Rapides" - an oval steel loop with a threaded metal nut that joins the ends of the loop) to replace when work out / squashed through the Winch Rollers.
*As of 2009 we have used load rated Maillon Rapides. These should be done up with a spanner, hence spanners being attached to the winches.
*The ones we use are manufactured by Maillon Rapide, Type: PPENZ10. "10mm Standard Shape Galvanised Mild Steel Maillon Rapide (Quick link)"
* Spec: Height 89mm, Width internal 20.5mm, Gate Opening 12mm, Conformity: EN362, EN12275. Type Breaking Load: 55kN / Working Load Limit (WLL) 1100kg
*They are available Mail Ordered from Abaris International (01484 768277) Price £4.09 (incl VAT) each.

A Tost model ?? converted and delivered by Skylaunch in March 2008. Cost of essential maintenance was similar to the cost of conversion: mounted on a twin-axle trailer with large, narrow drums, no paying on gear, new roller boxes and the Skylaunch panel.
The winch is powered by an Oldsmobile V8 455 cubic inch (7.5l) capacity engine fuelled with Propane gas. More details about the engine here:Oldsmobile 455 data. The power from the engine is transferred to the drive axle via a GM TH400 automatic transmission unit.
Parts replaced / work done
* Replacement (second hand) manifolds fitted.
* Engine oil and filter changed.
* Transmission oil and filter changed.
* Rocker cover gaskets changed.
* Leaking oil pressure switch replaced.
* Transmission cooler fan switch moved away from exhaust manifold.
* Compressions checked.
* Half shaft nuts re torqued.
* Exhaust system braced to prevent silencers swinging on manifolds.

New Caravan
March(?) 2010: Chris Bessent arranged the purchase of a cheap caravan that can be turned into the new launch point caravan. Steve Barber and Alan Saunders and others have stripped the interior of all its furniture and fittings ready for the the re-fit.

Re-fit plan
The aim is to get the caravan refitted during Summer 2010, ready for use in October 2010.
*Fit new floor to caravan: 3/4" plywood or OSB (Existing floor (chipboard?) is very spongy and won't last long)
*If necessary, cross-beams can be fitted below the floor. Either wooden or metal (welded to caravan's perimeter chassis)
*Corner legs to be checked and fixed / replaced if necessary.
*Check jockey wheel. Fix broken bracket.
(Done - rewelded by Peter Ellison in April. SB13/6)
*Reinforcing frame to be fitted around the doorway - wood or preferably steel. (people pull themselves up into the caravan by pulling heavily on the sides - leading to distrortion and cracks)
*Handles to be fitted to the outside for ease of moving the caravan. Strongly recommend fitting structural elements (preferably welded steel) to transfer forces to the chassis of the caravan, not just bolt them to the flimsy walls.
*Check: Is the caravan weather tight? If not, fix the leaking areas. (This caravan will probably be stored outside)
*: Need to replace window catch rubber toggles (flexi catches?) - available from caravan shops or Ebay.
*Fit lino / similarly hardwearing & waterproof covering to floor.
*DECISION: Which way round should the caravan be orientated in use? (Facing up the field / across the field?)
* Obtain and fit worktop, and legs. Include cut-out for the signal/timing box of electronics. Would be nice to have a removable perspex top - notices could be put underneath this.
I recommend flat-pack desk from Ikea or similar. Signal unit could be surface mounted. SB 13/6
*DECISION: Work out where the following items are to be located - bearing in mind ergonomics, and the centre of gravity of the finished/loaded caravan. Ideally the caravan will only have slight nose weight to allow for easy positioning.
*Obtain and build/install racking / shelving / cupboard for parachutes (probably best located over the axle for CofG reasons)
I recommend pine flat-pack self-assembly units obtainable from Ikea - easier than build from scratch SB 13/6
*Obtain and build/install shelving / cupboards for: forms, pens, paperwork, flight manuals, barograph, binoculars, cushions & packing, etc.
*Obtain or build a storage box for lead ballast weights. Again, probably best to be over the axle. Needs to be very strong and located above a main chassis rail.
*Obtain / build and fit seating.
*Fit notice boards to internal wall.
*Paint caravan exterior. Probably copy existing red and white check pattern for walls and matt black for the roof.
*: Black will produce a high heat gain but is possibly needed as a background to the signalling lamp. (AS 13/6)
*Choose position and copy existing mounting system to attach windsock and mast to the new caravan.
*DECIDE: What signal lights to use? How to mount them, considering: Ease of visibility for winch driver, ease of adjusting the positioning, etc. Make mounts and fit to the caravan.
*: Furneaux Riddall (Portsmouth) have an LED Work Light link (ref:7450) £65 which may be good as a signalling light. At 15W it should be at least as bright as a 75W Halogen and at 1.29A voltage dop will not be a problem. Will also extend battery life. Beam angle may be too wide? (AS 13/6)
*Decide on position of blackboard on outside of caravan. (or upgrade to whiteboard?)
*Battery to be fitted to the existing battery box on the A-frame. Arrange battery clamp and new leads and THICK, good quality wiring.
*Choose best position for circuit breakers and battery condition gauge (use the items from the old caravan, just allow for their position, only move them when ready to use the new caravan)
*Install good wiring in the caravan for the signal lights, signal buzzer, signal box, etc.
*When the rest of the caravan is ready, transfer signal controller box, signal lights, battery gauge, circuit breaker, windsock mast, etc to the new caravan.
*Test that everything works as desired.
*Transfer all the paperwork, forms, manuals, etc into the new caravan.
*Use Caravan. (taking care not to destroy it...)

* The Inter-Club League is intended to encourage competitive cross-country flying on a less formal basis than National and Regional competitions, involving pilots at all levels of cross-country competence.

* The competition will take the form of weekend 'Meets' between the four clubs in each League. A 'Meet' will be hosted by each of the clubs in turn throughout the season, giving pilots and crews an opportunity to visit and fly from other clubs in their area. (Note: Some Leagues comprise 3 or 5 clubs - Rules 1 & 9 cover this).

* The intention is not to give great glory to individuals, but to promote rivalry between the clubs. The honours each weekend, and over the season, will therefore go to the club amassing the highest total score for all its pilots.

* Special emphasis will be put on the performance of Novice pilots.

* The host club for each weekend will be responsible for providing the organisation for the competition, so there will be an opportunity for people to learn contest direction, task setting, start and finish line control, scoring etc...

* The host club must undertake to provide appropriate launching facilities, although it is intended that there should be minimal interruption to normal club flying.

* Poviding agreement is reached between participating clubs there will be no membership charges.
# Each club shall field a team of 3 pilots comprising one Novice, one Intermediate and one Pundit. The club shall nominate a team captain who need not be a pilot.
# The pilot classes are defined as follows:-
#: <u>Novice</u> Any pilot who by 1st April of the League year has not flown in a rated competition, (Regionals, Inter-Services or junior Nationals) has not flown a 300k qualifying for Gold Distance.
#: <u>Intermediate</u> Any pilot who by 1st April of the League year has not flown in a Nationals level competition, has not flown a 500k qualifying for Diamond Distance.
#: <u>Pundit</u> Anyone can be a pundit.
# If desired a pilot may fly in a higher class, eg. a pilot qualifying for Intermediate status may be entered as his club's Pundit.
# Pilots flying in the Novice class may fly any Standard Class glider. They may also fly gliders of any class with a handicap no greater than the currently highest handicapped Standard Class glider.
# Pilots flying in the Novice class must not carry water-ballast.
# Task setters should whenever possible set Novice tasks which are feasible for those Novices flying older generation wooden gliders.
# Task setting will be done by the host team's Contest Director assisted by the Team Captain.
# The competition will be run and scored broadly according to the BGA Competition Handbook, Windicapping and Held start-line included. Y to be announced at briefing, and to be at the Competition Directors discretion. Preferred evidence of competitor’s flights is by logger but cameras are acceptable. It is the pilot’s responsibility to supply the evidence in whichever form within seven days to the relevant Contest Director. Logger files may be sent electronically.
# A weekend Meet shall be declared a contest when pilots in any class have a scoring task.<br /><br /><u>SCORING</u><br /><br />
# Each class will be scored as a separate task group. These daily scores will be added for the weekend, and the weekend League points will be awarded in EACH CLASS as follows:
# The winner will be awarded the same number of points as there are clubs in the league plus 1 point for launching. Each position down from 1st will reduce the points by 1 point.<br />e.g. Assuming 4 clubs announce that they are competing at the start of the season then if:<br />
#: <br />All four pilots score:
#: 1st place = 5 points
#: 2nd place = 4 points
#: 3rd place = 3 points
#: 4th place = 2 points<br />
#: <br />If only three pilots score and 1 lands back:
#: 1st place = 5 points
#: 2nd place = 4 points
#: 3rd place = 3 points
#: 4th place = 1 point<br />
#: <br />Any club failing to take a contest launch scores zero.
# The weekend League points in each class are added together for each Club to determine the scores for each Meet, and for the season.
# In the event of a draw at the end of the season, or in the Inter-league Final, the winner will be the club with greater cumulative points on the daily '1000' point scores.
# Any No-Contest weekend (or scoring but disappointing weekend) may be re-run in all classes or in part if all team captains agree. If this happens, it is recommended that all scoring flights are counted towards the total season scores.
# a. Subject to 16b, no pilot may fly on more than four contest days during one season (except to appear in the Inter-League Final).<br />b. When a two-seater flies with pilots qualifying for different classes, it may only compete in a class appropriate to the higher-classed pilot; in this case, the lower-classed pilot will not have the flight counted towards the limit of four contest days. This is to encourage cross-country training and development.<br />c. When a two seater flies with pilots qualifying for the the same class, both pilots will have the flight counted towards their limit four contest days.
# Launching may be by aerotow or winch/autotow as appropriate.
# All matters of flying safety remain the prerogative of the host club's CFI./ duty instructor. Team Captains should ensure that the standard of competence of their pilots is adequate, but the need for check-flights should be discussed with the host club's CFI.
# The Contest Director in committee with the Team Captains (or the relevant deputy captain if the captain is the subject of the dispute) will act as stewards, whose ruling on any matters in dispute will be final.
# Non-competing gliders will be encouraged to fly the competition tasks wherever local operating conditions permit this.
# The host club's Team Captain is responsible for getting the scores out to all participating teams within 10 days.
# These rules may be modified at any time by agreement between all Team Captains.
# An Inter-League Final will be held each year over the 3-day August Bank Holiday weekend between the winners of each League. Venue will be announced by Mid-July, and printed in the August 'Sailplane & Gliding'
What the League is about:

* It is confidently expected that clubs will vie for the honour of organising the best party on the Saturday night of their Meet.
