Winch Engines
Tost winches were generally supplied with Oldsmobile V8 455 cu. in. engines (As supplied in Opel Diplomat cars in Germany) Skylaunch uses Chevy 454 cu in, or bigger, big block engines. Although both Oldsmobile and Chevy were owned by General motors, there are no real common parts between the two families of engines - the bellhousing patterns are even different - but crucially, there is enough similarity with the mounting dowels and the 2 lower bolt hole positions that adaptor plates can be used to mate what is known as the B.O.P (Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac) bellhousing pattern with the Chevy bellhousing pattern. James Hunneman has used a Transdapt adaptor plate to mate the Oldsmobile engines with Chevy Gearboxes. Doing this also needs a spigot adaptor and very careful measuring of the flexplate to torque converter spacing and machining of spacer blocks if required. Ask JH for details if this needs to be done.

Oldsmobile 455 data Summer 2022 status: Both Oldsmobile engines had issues. Stripped to check condition. New rebuild kit purchased. One good engine can be easily assembled from the two engines. Status as of 29th June 2020: Club owns 2 Oldsmobile 455 engines. One, purchased in 2019, installed in X/Skybrid Winch. The other was removed from the Skybrid in April 2019. Bottom end in great condition, heads need rework. Stored, semi-dismantled, as spares.

Pontiac 400 Status as of Early 2023: Pontiac engine was installed into X winch in early 2021. Worked OK thru to Summer 2022 when issues with cam follower and valve rockers occurred. Engine removed from winch. Heads, bores and bottom end found to be good. Damaged parts replaced, rebuilt with new timing chain and gaskets. New valley pan leaked, so BC got original pressed steel one repaired and installed that. Status as of 29th June 2020: Pontiac 400 engine is being kept as a spare. Could be moved into either winch, but needs a transmission adaptor plate if to be used with a Chevy gearbox. Also would need engine mount and exhaust changes on either winch. Not a particularly valuable engine, so best being kept as a spare for now.

Winch Transmissions
The winches use the General Motors TH400 3 speed automatic transmission. These have a reputation as a strong, reliable transmission, hence their use by both Tost and Skylaunch in their winches. As mentioned in the Engines section, there are both B.O.P. and Chevy Bellhousing patterns. If any future transmission purchases are made, it's suggested that they should have the Chevy bellhousing, and just use an adaptor plate if it's being mated to an Oldsmobile engine. The transmission are also available with three different lengths of tailshaft housing: 4", 9" and 13". As of 2019, the club is standardising on the 4" short tailshaft housing. (A transmission can be converted, but it requires a full stripdown, a new tailshaft housing and a new tailshaft)

B.O.P Pattern, short tailshaft housing  Currently dismantled in box in red container. Casing has crack around one dowel hole - could possibly be weld repaired. B.O.P. Pattern, short tailshaft, Painted dark red *** May 2022 update: Gearbox failed - from memory, it wouldn't shift up into higher gears. Transmission removed from X winch. ***  Originally from the Bus /Reserve winch (had 9" tailshaft as do all standard Tost winches). Removed in 2019, rebuilt by Newbury Transmissions February 2020 with short tailshaft & housing.. Currently in Red Container as a spare. Should be fitted to X/Skybrid Winch in Summer 2020 to check correct function.

Chevy Pattern, Deep Sump  Bought outright from Skylaunch in April 2019. Fitted to X/Skybrid Winch from April 2019 to August 2019 when it was removed so it could be mated to the Chevy 454 engine in the new Y winch by Skylaunch.

Chevy Pattern, £80 ebay special  Purchased by James Hunneman in Autumn 2019 for a bargain price, complete with Torque Converter. Did have a drum brake on the rear of the unit - this was removed and the tailshaft housing replaced with the correct standard short one. The splined output shaft mates fine with the standard propshaft. ***May 2022 update - This Transmission was installed behind the Pontiac 400 engine in the X winch. Required a custom spacer plate between crank and flexplate (and new bolts) to allow space for a adaptor plate to mate this Chevy pattern transmission with the Pontiac engine pattern.
