Status/Work done
- Skylaunch correctly positioned the engine & fabricated engine mounts, exhaust system, etc to make the Chevy engine work in the rebuilt winch. Winch delivered and tested AOK January 2020.
- August 2019 - JH temporarily mounted the Chevy Engine & transmission into the Reserve Winch - for transportation to Skylaunch. Rigged up the starter motor and did a compression check. Good results obtained.
- Summer 2019 - was decided to send Reserve winch off to Skylaunch for them to complete the conversion into a 2 large drum winch. This Chevy engine to be installed as part of the work. JH removed rocker covers to check condition, put endoscope through spark plug holes to check condition - looks great.
- Swap into the Skybrid winch never happened. JH turned the engine over regularly, and occasionally put some oil into the bores.
- JH assembled adaptor plates and other parts required to make the engine ready to swap into the Skybrid winch to replace the Oldsmobile engine during 2013.
- Purchased late 2012

History
Late 2012, committee decided that having a spare engine would be a good idea. James Hunneman researched and suggested that A Chevy 454 Big Block engine would probably be the best bet - these are more readily available than the Oldsmobile 455 and spare parts are more easily obtainable - eg off the shelf from Skylaunch and American Car Parts Suppliers in both the UK & US. Adaptor plates are available to mate Chevy Engines with Oldsmobile Transmissions. A rough budget to do get the engine and parts required was worked out. JH found suitable engine - being sold by Alex of American Autoparts of Redhill, Surrey.
The information JH was told at the time was: They got the engine off one of their customers. It had been in a motorhome. American Autoparts have take off the sump to inspect the bearing shells - apparently they're perfect. Also, the inlet was taken off to check the cam. That was perfect too. So, it's had new oil, filter and new gaskets on the inlet and sump. Did have a serpentine belt arrangement, but that has been removed. Has a power steering pump mount, he said they could help out with pulleys and the like. Comes with engine mounts. It's the 4 bolt mains, high performance casting.
