Saturday 5 Jan 2019

Great start to the soaring season with lots of people turning up to register their interest in the 2019 InterClub League season.  It looks like Shalbourne will be joining a mostly-Oxfordshire league which will have just the one fixture on Spring Bank Holiday weekend, following on from which there will be a club league contest running one weekend a month during the summer with Novice, Intermediate and Pundit tasks set.  We hope there will also be a Task Week at some point later in the summer.  Liz, Pete and Tim will be doing something ICL-related on their duty days from now on through the season.

And to celebrate this, we ignored the cold grey weather and started the year with David N being forced to fly first with Liz and then Phil – but to make up for this, Phil duly signed off his Bronze – congrats to David who after a whizz or two in a motorglider will soon be exploring the skies of southern England!!

Q: What do you do on a wet December Saturday?

A: Fly your Silver Distance!!!

Not many people turned up today, but with E team stalwarts Liz and Graham along with Alex and Matt from SUGC, we soon wrapped up an analysis of angles of attack on the winch launch.  Matt’s working towards his bronze and wanted some help with airspace – and what better way to learn this than map up and plan a few tasks?  We duly briefed and prepped up a flight to Bicester, after which we scrubbed at Shalbourne but sent Matt off home to his Condor set-up where, with a bit of advice from Alex, he flew a very respectable Silver Distance flight as briefed.  With yet more wonders of modern technology we’ve done some trace analysis which in discussion seems to reflect pretty much what he’d have done in real life – so well done Matt on your Virtual Silver Distance.  And what a great learning experience this has been all round!
