James goes to Japan

While James W was in Japan he managed to find a small gliding club.

Before flying you need to familiarise yourself with site.

The club is within the flood plain and the hanger is just the other side of  the flood defences.

Also need to get out the launch point set up

Time to get a briefing…

…and do some flying

Better check the log.

Toys to be packed away

Wednesday 7th Feb

K6Sunny day, wind straight down the strip from the north – what more could one want?  It was enough to tempt the pair of K6’s and the K7 out.  The lack of flying over the last couple on months did mean that the was rather a long list of folks needing check flights so the K13 and duty instructor were kept busy.

Not quite enough wind to keep the ridge working reliably but there were thermals to be used.  Ken R demonstrated how to stay airborne with his 1:16.  Second place honours were also taken in the same K6 by Bill C with 56 minutes.  Plaudits for the smoothest landing goes to Alan P making his first flights since his spine operation.  34 launches and 7:18 of flying time.

It wouldn’t be Wednesday flying without mention of cake – Tony P not only had baked a cake but also made a cheese cake which was made short work of.

January – a record breaking month

Sadly not a good record – this January we flew the least we have done in any calendar month.  Even less than February last year.  To put in perspective the flying on last Sunday (4th) was double the number of launches and 6 times the time flown than that achieved for the whole of January.  At least February has got off to a cracking start

Uni go to the Mynd

“We (Nick and Alex) took the mighty Sports Vega for a trip to the Juniors last weekend. As our first trip with a glider it was simply epic. Although the weather could have been better, we had brilliant time. A huge thanks to the everyone at Shalbourne Gliding, who encouraged and helped us with the glider, and the guys at UK Junior Gliding and the Midland Gliding Club for making it happen. Round 3, here were come…”
