Wednesday 5th April

It may have been sunny but with the wind from the north it was a bit nippy but it did mean it was straight down the runway,  1,800′ launch in a Puchacz can’t be bad.  Some bits of ridge lift on offer but most of the soaring activity was from thermals.  6 private gliders rigged.

Although the forecast top cover in the afternoon did not appear the thermals died and that seemed to be it.  Paul B took the K8 for the hangar flight and Rowland took the Puchacz for a circuit and Paul P the K13.  Just over half an hour later they returned.  Time for a couple of check flight circuits with Andy B and Jonty H – both manage to show incredible resolve by just flying straight through 5 up and not circling.

Unfortunately, what should have been the penultimate flight of the day had a heavy landing and broke the undercarriage.  Huge thanks to the folks who stayed on to derig the Puchacz and put it into its trailer as that was the only way to move it.

Almost 16 hours flown off 39 launches

Last Weekend of March

Yes, I know this entry is out of order.  Saturday an impressive 48 launches but none on Sunday.  There should have been 2 more launches on Saturday but the winch ran out of fuel.  Not much thermic activity but 9 flights managed between 10 and 20 minutes plus one of 23 minutes by Carol & Phil in their Janus.

First April weekend

A very busy weekend with 37 launches on Saturday and a massive 51 on Sunday.

Saturday’s launches were fitted in around some heavy afternoon showers and it never really got soarable, with just a few extended flights.

Sunday was much brighter and that enticed out lots of gliders, with 9 private gliders in action. The weather was pretty much to plan with little scratchy thermals from the off. Cloud base crept up and by afternoon the thermals had organised themselves properly with good climbs to 4000′.

A fun but busy day! Thanks to those that helped out.

Wednesday 22nd March (best quit while you’re winning)

I received a couple of texts on the way to the airfield to the effect ‘I’m in a deluge, so going back home’. So, on arriving, was pleasantly surprised to find the gates open. Up at the clubhouse found the usual suspects shooting a line and donning overalls. ‘OK – so where’s the new thermostat?’ So off to the Winch Shelter – the only place more unpleasant than standing naked in the middle of the airfield.

Being the most agile Ken H was stuffed into the entrails of the Skybrid while we passed him tools, parts and encouraging remarks.

Then break for lunch by which time we were starting to think about flying.

.. but being a little short of numbers Denis G got stuck into the broken strimmer. The solution involved using some epoxy resin to glue things together. As this seemed to be setting a little slowly I decided to start the generator to get a little heat into it …. it refused to start….

But it was encouraging to see that our landlord had started level out some of the wrinkles on the airfield.

So expect to see heaps of soil being left in various strategic places around the airfield.
